George Ritchie was a soldier in 1943 who experienced a profound near-death experience that later inspired Dr. Raymond Moody to write his pioneering book on NDEs. During his military service, Ritchie died and was declared dead by medical staff, experiencing an extended journey through the afterlife realms.
During his out-of-body experience, Ritchie was given what he described as "the grand tour" of the afterlife, including extensive observations of Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. He encountered Jesus Christ directly, who served as his guide through these realms. In Purgatory, he witnessed souls working through their obsessions and addictions in a grinding fashion. He observed assembly line workers in a spiritual state, unable to interact with the physical world, including a woman desperately trying to obtain cigarettes but unable to grasp them. He saw suicides chained to the consequences of their acts, including a young man following his father saying "I'm sorry, Pa!" repeatedly to ears that could not hear. The experience included specific veridical observations of the medical environment and spiritual realms. Ritchie observed people unaware of spiritual beings right beside them, souls attempting to communicate with the living who could not hear them, and the systematic nature of purgatorial suffering. He witnessed how those in Purgatory who had committed suicide were bound to observe the ongoing consequences of their actions on their loved ones. Jesus explained to him that these souls were "chained to every consequence of their act." Upon his return to life, Ritchie's experience had profound and lasting effects. He later became a doctor specializing in psychiatry, using his NDE insights to help others. His detailed account became one of the first modern NDEs to be extensively documented and studied, providing a comprehensive view of multiple afterlife realms and their inhabitants.
