Dr. Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon with decades of experience at Harvard Medical School, contracted an extremely rare case of E. coli bacterial meningitis on November 10, 2008. The infection attacked his neocortex, shutting down all higher brain function and placing him in a deep coma for seven days. During his coma, while his neocortex was completely offline, Alexander experienced an extraordinary journey through otherworldly realms. He began in what he called the "Realm of the Earthworm's-Eye View," a dark, primordial place of pulsing sounds and murky sensations. From there, he was rescued by a spinning melody of light that transported him to the "Gateway," a brilliant world of incredible beauty featuring lush countryside, laughing children, and millions of butterflies. He was accompanied by a beautiful girl on a butterfly wing who communicated three profound messages without words: "You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever," "You have nothing to fear," and "There is nothing you can do wrong." Alexander then journeyed to the "Core," an immense void filled with the presence of the Divine, which he called "Om." Here he received direct knowledge about the nature of existence, consciousness, and the universe's foundation of unconditional love. He learned that evil exists in tiny amounts to allow free will, but love overwhelmingly dominates reality. Throughout his journey, he had no memory of his earthly identity, allowing him to experience these realms without the limitations of his physical self. The most remarkable veridical element occurred when Alexander saw his guide - the girl on the butterfly wing. After his recovery, he received a photograph of his biological sister Betsy, whom he had never met (she died before their reunion). He immediately recognized her as his heavenly guide, providing powerful validation of his experience. On his seventh day in coma, against all medical expectations, Alexander suddenly awakened with his full faculties intact, eventually making a complete recovery that his doctors called miraculous.
