After days of severe illness with fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, he experienced respiratory and cardiac arrest at home while his roommates were away. During his clinical death, Melvin reported leaving his body and observing it from above, noting specific details like a hidden fingerprint in ceiling texture he later verified with a ladder. He was then transported through a dark void toward a brilliant light, encountering a figure in white robes with blue sash who he identified as Jesus Christ, noting traumatic wounds on the hands and feet. This being showed him an extensive hellish realm organized as a descending spiral with cube-shaped cells stacked six high along a broad road. Each ten-by-ten foot cube contained a trapped soul experiencing personalized torments related to their earthly deeds. Melvin was guided through this domain by a reptilian creature who showed him various levels of punishment, from boredom and isolation to severe physical and psychological torments. He observed that no children or mentally disabled individuals were present. Throughout the experience, he received telepathic communications explaining divine justice, free will, and the nature of sin. The experience culminated when the white-robed figure rescued him from imminent entrapment, carrying him back through the void. Upon returning to his body, Melvin was rushed to Tucson Medical Center where he was treated for severe dehydration from cholera. The experience profoundly transformed him from an atheist-agnostic to a committed Christian. He verified the ceiling fingerprint observation post-experience, confirming details impossible to see from ground level.
