In Pim Van Lommel's groundbreaking prospective study of near-death experiences in the Netherlands, one of the most famous veridical out-of-body experiences was documented. A male patient had experienced a cardiac arrest and was brought to the hospital in a comatose state. During the resuscitation efforts, a nurse needed to intubate the patient and had to remove his dentures to clear his airway. In the urgency of the situation, she placed the dentures in the drawer of a crash cart and, in the chaos of the emergency, forgot about them.
The patient remained in a coma for an extended period following his cardiac arrest. Medical staff worked to stabilize him, and he was eventually moved to different areas of the hospital as his condition evolved. A week after the initial emergency, the same nurse who had removed his dentures went to visit the patient, who had by then regained consciousness. To her astonishment, when she entered his room, the patient immediately recognized her. The patient told the other nurses present that this particular nurse knew where his dentures were. He explained that he had seen her remove his dentures and place them in the crash cart drawer during his resuscitation, even though he had been in a deep coma at the time. He also described other events and procedures he had witnessed during the resuscitation efforts. The nurse was completely shocked by this revelation, as she was certain the patient had been deeply unconscious and could not have possibly seen or known what she did with his dentures. The nurse confirmed that the patient was definitely in a coma during the resuscitation and that there was no way he could have naturally observed her actions or the location of his dentures. She also verified that he accurately described other events that occurred while he was clinically dead. This case became one of the most cited examples of veridical perception during an out-of-body experience in the scientific literature on NDEs.
