Ricardo, an 82-year-old patient, was admitted to a hospital in San Antonio, Texas, after collapsing. Shortly after admission, he experienced a cardiac arrest within the hospital. Dr. John Lerma and the medical team successfully resuscitated him, bringing him back from clinical death. Once Ricardo was stabilized and fully conscious in the ICU, he showed an eager desire to speak with Dr. Lerma about his experience during the cardiac arrest.
Ricardo told Dr. Lerma about his near-death experience and out-of-body experience that occurred during his cardiac arrest. He described various aspects of his NDE, including beautiful elements that had deeply moved him. However, what Ricardo was most interested in verifying was a specific observation he had made while out of his body in the trauma room. He told Dr. Lerma that during his OBE, he had seen a 1985 quarter sitting on top of a dusty high cabinet in the trauma room. Ricardo specifically asked Dr. Lerma to check if the quarter was really there, as he wanted confirmation that his amazing experience, including all the beautiful aspects of his NDE, had been real and not just a hallucination. This request for verification showed Ricardo's need to validate the profound spiritual experience he had undergone. The specific date on the quarter and its location on a high, dusty cabinet made this a particularly precise and verifiable observation. Dr. Lerma, accompanied by a couple of nurses as witnesses, obtained a ladder and climbed up to look on top of the cabinet. There he found exactly what Ricardo had described - a dusty quarter with the date 1985. This verification had such a profound impact on Dr. Lerma that he chose to change his career path, pursuing end-of-life hospice medicine. The case demonstrates how a simple, specific observation during an OBE can provide powerful verification of consciousness existing outside the physical body.
