Howard Storm, an atheist university professor who frequently mocked Christianity, experienced a profound near-death experience that completely transformed his life. During a medical emergency, Storm found himself outside his body in his hospital room. After frantically trying to get his wife to listen to him without success, he heard voices coming from beyond an open door in the corner of the room. Initially, these voices seemed friendly and beckoning, so he decided to follow them.
As Storm followed these beings, their demeanor suddenly changed from friendly to hostile. Even though he no longer had a physical body in the conventional sense, he experienced real pain as these entities began to violate and torment him. The fear he experienced was absolute and overwhelming. He found himself in a dark, hellish realm with beings that appeared to be either demons or other tortured souls. The experience was one of complete horror and suffering. Eventually, Storm managed to escape this hellish experience and encountered beings of light. During his life review with these celestial beings, he discovered that the moment in his life they were most excited about was when, as a teenager, he had heard his sister crying in a neighboring bedroom and went to hug and comfort her for the rest of the night. This simple act of love and compassion appeared to be one of the most important things he had done in his entire life. After his NDE, Storm underwent a complete transformation. He went from being an atheist who mocked Christianity to becoming a Christian minister. He reported seeing a Being of Light from a distance, which he described as being like the center of a galaxy, but felt he was too ashamed of his own lack of goodness to approach it. His experience emphasizes that life's primary purpose is about loving others, and his dark experience serves as a warning about the reality of hellish states after death.
