On a Christmas Day in an unspecified year at a hospital in Great Falls, Dr. Lloyd Rudy, a highly respected cardiac surgeon, performed emergency cardiac surgery on a patient whose oral infection had spread to a heart valve. During the surgery, the patient's condition deteriorated catastrophically. The surgery appeared to fail completely, and the patient showed no vital signs. Life support machines were turned off, and medical staff began leaving the operating theatre, believing the patient had died.
The patient's chest had already been sewn up in preparation for autopsy when suddenly, without any CPR or medical intervention, some vital signs began to return spontaneously. Staff rushed back to the theatre, and miraculously, the patient's blood pressure and heart rate normalized. He had effectively come back from the dead without any resuscitation efforts - an extremely rare occurrence. The patient remained completely unconscious during the entire surgery and fell into a coma for two days following the restoration of vital functions. When the patient finally awoke from his coma, he reported having had an out-of-body experience during the surgery. Most remarkably, he described seeing a series of Post-it notes on a monitor in the operating room. These notes had been placed there by a nurse who had taken messages for Dr. Rudy that he needed to respond to after the surgery. Critically, these notes were put on the monitor after the surgery had begun and were removed immediately after it finished. Dr. Rudy confirmed there was absolutely no way the patient could have seen these notes through normal means, as the patient was completely unconscious before the operation began and the notes were only present during the surgery. This spontaneous return from death without CPR, combined with accurate observation of temporarily-placed objects, makes this one of the most extraordinary verified OBE cases. Dr. Rudy shared this account in 2011, shortly before his own death in 2012, as a spontaneous aside during a dental surgery discussion.
