Frank arrived at Ohio State University Hospital in late 2003 or early 2004 with vital signs so critical that he was effectively dead on arrival. Dr. Chris Yerington, an anesthesiologist, was part of the medical team attempting to save his life. The team placed Frank into hypothermic cardiac arrest for an extended period as part of the emergency treatment protocol. His EEG showed isoelectric activity, meaning his brain showed no electrical activity whatsoever.
During this period of clinical death, Frank experienced an out-of-body experience where he found himself stuck on the ceiling of the operating room for a prolonged time. From this vantage point, he witnessed the medical team's attempts to save his life. Most remarkably, while on the ceiling, Frank was able to read and memorize the serial numbers on three lights in the operating room. He also overheard and remembered specific conversations that occurred between medical staff during his resuscitation. After being wheeled to the ICU where he was expected to die, Frank surprisingly staged a full recovery within a day or two. When Dr. Yerington returned to the hospital and found Frank alive, Frank immediately recognized him and recounted his experience. Frank told Dr. Yerington about being stuck on the ceiling and provided the serial numbers he had memorized from the three OR lights. He also recalled the specific conversations he had overheard. Dr. Yerington verified that the conversations Frank recalled had indeed occurred during a period when Frank's EEG was isoelectric, meaning it was impossible for him to have heard them through normal means. Most astonishingly, when the serial numbers were checked, they were found to be completely accurate. This case is considered one of the most remarkable verified OBEs due to the specific, verifiable nature of the serial numbers that Frank could not have known through any normal means.
