Fifty-three-year-old Pete Morgan suffered two cardiac arrests and severe chest pains. During his first cardiac arrest, he left his body and watched the resuscitation efforts from above. When Dr. Sabom asked him to describe exactly what he saw, Pete provided remarkably detailed and accurate observations - so precise that Dr. Sabom noted the recording could be used to teach physicians resuscitation techniques. Pete described specific medical procedures including a doctor's attempt to restart his heart: "He struck me. And I mean he really whacked me. He came back with his fist from way behind his head and hit me right in the center of my chest." He observed doctors inserting a needle in his chest and shocking him, describing how his body "jumped about two feet off the table" from the defibrillation. His detailed observations of the resuscitation procedures, which he could not have seen from his physical position, provided compelling evidence of consciousness existing outside the body during clinical death. Dr. Sabom was particularly impressed by the accuracy and medical precision of Pete's account.
