A young girl experienced an out-of-body experience after her blood sugar soared to the highest level ever recorded at Children's Hospital, causing her to slip into a diabetic coma. She remained comatose for several days before recovery. When Dr. Morse interviewed her after she regained consciousness, she described her experience: "All of a sudden, I was floating above my body looking down at myself. There were two doctors pushing me on one of those stretchers toward a room. Both women were doctors." She noted feeling strange about the dissociation but emphasized that while she had been sick with headache when brought in by her mother, during the floating experience she felt good and had no pain or discomfort. The experience provided her with specific visual observations of the medical team and procedures while her physical body remained in a deep coma. Her ability to identify that both attending physicians were female and describe being transported on a stretcher demonstrated conscious awareness despite her comatose state.
