Pam Reynolds underwent remarkable brain surgery where her blood was chilled twenty-five degrees and later to sixty degrees. As part of the delicate medical procedure, her heart was stopped and brain waves flattened. Blood was drained from her body "like oil from a car." By all medical definitions, she was clinically dead with no brain activity and no blood flowing through the brain. Despite this state of clinical death, Pam had a vivid near-death experience. She left her body and observed the surgical procedures from above. During her out-of-body experience, she encountered beings of light that she could recognize and understand. She specifically recognized her grandmother among the figures of light. She also saw her great-great Aunt Maggie and a grandfather. All the beings she encountered appeared to be at their best, in their prime years rather than how they appeared at death. The experience occurred while she had absolutely no measurable brain function, challenging conventional understanding of consciousness.
