A patient with possible cardiac arrest was treated in the coronary care unit while in a coma. A nurse removed his false teeth and placed them in a crash cart drawer. The patient remained comatose and was moved to another room before regaining consciousness. A week later, when the nurse visited him in ICU, the patient recognized her despite being comatose during their only interaction. He told other nurses present that she knew where his teeth were. The nurse was astonished as she removed the teeth while he was unconscious and he was moved before waking. The patient accurately described the teeth placement and other events during treatment. This occurred within Van Lommel's prospective study published in The Lancet, making it the first verified OBE in a formal prospective study. The peer review required for The Lancet adds significant credibility.
