Ricardo, age 82, was admitted to a San Antonio, Texas hospital after collapsing. He experienced cardiac arrest but responded to resuscitation by Dr. John Lerma. Once stabilized and conscious in ICU, Ricardo eagerly told Dr. Lerma about his NDE and OBE. During the OBE, Ricardo observed the trauma room from an elevated perspective. He saw a 1985 quarter covered in dust on top of a high cabinet. Ricardo asked Dr. Lerma to verify the quarter, wanting confirmation his experience was real. Dr. Lerma, with nurses present as witnesses, obtained a ladder and checked the cabinet top. He found exactly what Ricardo described: a dusty quarter dated 1985. This verification had such profound impact on Dr. Lerma that he changed his career to pursue end-of-life hospice medicine.
