Maria, a Spanish-speaking migrant worker, was admitted to Harbourview Hospital in Seattle in 1979. After being in the hospital for two days, she experienced a cardiac arrest. Following resuscitation, Maria reported an out-of-body experience to social worker Kimberly Clark Sharp. During the OBE, Maria claimed to have left her body and traveled outside the hospital building. She saw a blue tennis shoe on a window ledge several floors above ground level. Maria asked Sharp to verify if the shoe existed. Kimberly Clark Sharp searched multiple floors and windows, eventually discovering the blue tennis shoe exactly as Maria described. The shoe was positioned on a ledge impossible for Maria to see from her room or any location she could have physically accessed. Sharp concluded the only way Maria could have seen the shoe was through an out-of-body experience. This became one of the most famous verified OBEs, presented by Kenneth Ring. Multiple debunking attempts have failed to explain how Maria knew about the shoe.
