Tienke Klein was born to a Jewish family in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). At age three, her father was taken away and she never saw him again. During World War II, she was captured by the Japanese and sent to Ambarawa prison camp in Java, where she endured starvation, physical cruelty, daily inhumanity, and witnessed carnage that stole her childhood. After liberation, healing did not come easily. The darkness of the Holocaust continued to haunt her for years, leaving her feeling shackled to the past. It would take a bicycle accident and near-death experience in her fifties to finally bring healing.
During her NDE following the bicycle accident, Klein was ejected from her body and found she was no longer angry. She became completely that energy - it was love, wisdom, and dynamism. The experience brought profound healing from her concentration camp trauma. She finally was able to grieve the loss of her father and process her imprisonment in the brutal camp. Klein received two essential messages during her NDE: "People love as much as they are able to" and "You don't need to go anywhere." The latter message meant "I am complete. I am freedom." She realized that ever since coming out of the prison camp, she had still been trying to get out of the prison camp psychologically. The profound insight was that she didn't need to go anywhere to regain freedom - no one could take away the ground of her soul. Like Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl, Klein's NDE taught her that nobody can take away her inner freedom. The experience provided complete liberation from decades of psychological imprisonment. She understood that regardless of past tragedies, peace and joy in life are still possible. The NDE allowed her to finally process and heal from the severe trauma of her childhood imprisonment and her father's death.
