Tikvah Feinstein, born in 1944, is an award-winning writer and activist who survived sexual assault by a rabbi in childhood yet maintained her Jewish roots. She discovered her biological father was David Horowitz, a UN diplomat who influenced the 1947 UN vote for Palestine partition. In 2001, she received an anthrax-contaminated letter that caused respiratory and heart failure, possibly weakening her heart. On February 5, 2007, she awoke feeling danger and an urgent need to leave her house. Following her intuition, she drove to a Foodland grocery store instead of staying home or going to her first choice store - a decision that saved her life as emergency response was available there.
Upon entering the store, she felt heart palpitations and began coughing as instructed for heart attacks. She then collapsed, striking the back of her head, and experienced cardiac arrest. She floated above the store with clear auditory perception and no sense of distance, observing the chaos below. She heard her deceased father approaching and saw her stepfather as a distinct image. A being moved ahead of her and she saw shapes. She had the profound realization: "This is where we always are. We are one big organism." When she woke in the ambulance, returning to her body felt heavy and constricted. The experience profoundly changed her perspective on retaliation and kindness. She realized that retaliation is not acceptable and she would not hurt others. She gained the understanding that kindness, despite being misrepresented as weakness, is actually strength. She emerged with certainty that death is not final. Feinstein is among the 5% who retain full mental faculties after clinical death. She received two key messages during her NDE: "Kindness is the greatest of human assets" and recognition that consciousness continues after physical death. The experience transformed her understanding of human nature and reinforced her commitment to compassion over retaliation.
