David Z., an active tennis player and conservative Jew, experienced sudden cardiac arrest at a tennis club on November 11, 2013. The event was caused by a 100% blockage of the left anterior descending artery. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered at the scene, and clinical death occurred with cessation of breathing and heart function. He was unconscious in a "cold coma" for five days, waking up on Tuesday with no memory of anything except his near-death experience.
The experience was intensely visual. He was rocketed straight upward toward a bright light that appeared like a different galaxy or vortex in the sky. When he hit the light, everything reversed - up became down and he was racing downward. As he approached Earth, which initially appeared in black and white, he saw streets and houses that felt like a town. When he got closer, Earth turned blue and green. Upon impact, the colors exploded in vivid blue and green that brought exhilarating feelings. The impact was described as a "huge rush" that was very fast. David first told his sister-in-law about the experience, who informed him about similar reported NDEs. The light he encountered was clearly mystical or otherworldly in origin, which he described as a "solar vortex or parallel dimension." He experienced excitement, peace, incredible pleasantness, happiness, and felt united or one with the world. Before his NDE, David was not very active with Judaism despite being a conservative Jew. His grandfather was a Holocaust survivor who lost seven to nine family members. After the experience, David's religion became of great importance to him. He gained certainty that an afterlife exists, no longer fears death, believes God is absolutely real, and understands life as meaningful and significant. He now has increased compassion for others and celebrates two birthdays - his original and his NDE date.
