The author experienced a near-death event due to calcium overload related to Crohn's disease. She had been taking calcium supplements for years when the brand was removed from the market. She switched to an over-the-counter calcium without reading directions and took excessive amounts. Over six months, she developed memory loss, muscle problems, lethargy, and began losing consciousness.
During hospitalization, while in the same room where her father-in-law had died, she experienced a profound NDE. A very bright golden light appeared in the windowless room. She heard beautiful music and perceived a holy man leading prayers for groups of people who were separated from her. She felt overwhelming joy, peace, warmth, safety, and calmness. The holy man continued speaking while bells and chimes tinkled. The groups of people were moving around, visiting and enjoying themselves like at a party she wasn't invited to. The author saw no tunnels to heaven, only experienced floating sensations with the calming golden light and golden human-like forms. She heard tinkling music and soothing words from a spiritual being. She remained conscious during the entire experience. Medical records showed she was only given potassium, no strong medications that could cause hallucinations. The day before this life-threatening event she had been very frightened and even tried to escape the hospital. After the experience, the fear disappeared. The calcium levels were dangerously high - her doctor wondered how she was still alive. The specialist determined it was 100% calcium blockage. She kept this experience silent for years afterward.
