Stephen's girlfriend underwent emergency surgery for an ectopic pregnancy with twins, where one baby was stuck in a fallopian tube. They had been together over a year but had just had an argument after a camping trip where she felt unwell. Stephen left and went home, lying on his bed 20 miles away. During the surgery, his girlfriend had an out-of-body experience where she saw Stephen lying on his bed and called out his name. At that exact moment, Stephen was startled awake by someone clearly shouting his name in his girlfriend's voice. The voice was so loud and clear that he went to his stairway landing to see who was calling, but no one was there. When they spoke days later, she said "I saw you lying down on your bed, and I called to you." Stephen exclaimed, "Oh my God, I heard you call! How can that be? You were 20 miles away!" This was one of the first things she told him before he could mention his experience. The simultaneous nature of the experience - her calling his name during surgery and him hearing it 20 miles away - convinced them they were soul mates. Years later, this shared experience continues to strengthen their relationship during difficult times, serving as proof of their deep spiritual connection.
