In 1739, an English Quaker named Mrs. Birkbeck was on her deathbed at the home of friends, unable to return to her own home due to her critical condition. Before her death, she expressed a strong desire to see her three children again, who were being cared for at her home. After voicing this wish, she appeared to fall asleep for about ten minutes. When she awakened, Mrs. Birkbeck claimed that she had gone home and seen her children. She died shortly after making this claim. Remarkably, at the same time Mrs. Birkbeck had her experience, her children at home became excited and told the adults caring for them that their mother had come to visit them. Both Mrs. Birkbeck's claim of visiting her children and the children's report of seeing their mother were independently confirmed shortly after the incidents occurred. The simultaneity of these experiences, with the dying mother claiming to have visited her children and the children independently reporting seeing their mother at the same time, suggests a genuine out-of-body visitation rather than coincidence or hallucination.
