This 19th century case from French Alsace involves Baeschly's great-uncle who had emigrated to the United States. On the night of his death, his brother and father in Brumath experienced an extraordinary phenomenon. After midnight, they were awakened by their front door opening noisily. When they went to investigate, they found the door inexplicably ajar. They closed and locked it, but it opened again with loud noise. This happened a third time, requiring them to bind the door with rope to keep it shut. Shortly after, they received a letter informing them that Baeschly's great-uncle had died in America on the exact date when the door kept opening. The dying man had reportedly expired, then opened his eyes one last time saying, "I just went on a grand journey: I went to see my brother in Brumath." No apparition was observed, but the inexplicable and noisy door openings corresponded precisely with the time of death across the Atlantic. The repeated physical phenomenon suggests a connection between the dying man's reported out-of-body visit and the mysterious events at his brother's home.
