Sixteen-year-old Will Barton fell over 40 feet from a tree while hunting for a Christmas tree in Idaho. He was instantly and totally paralyzed, unable to feel anything. X-rays showed broken and dislocated neck vertebrae. Dr. James F. Todd confirmed he could only breathe on his own. Barton became suicidal but could not move, even asking his mother to smother him with a pillow, which she refused.
Days later, physiotherapists raised his bed head too quickly, causing all blood to drain from his head. He lost consciousness and suffered cardiac arrest. During this, he had an NDE that started gloomy and lonely but transformed when a light dispelled the darkness. His entire being was immersed in this light, which gave him a choice: die or return to his body. He chose life. After resuscitation, he remained paralyzed but was mentally and emotionally changed by the positive NDE impact. He became willing to cooperate with long-term, painful rehabilitation. One year later, against all expectation, he was able to walk again. Dr. Todd stated that according to conventional medicine, Barton should have been quadriplegic for life, calling the recovery a "miracle." Barton attributed his recovery to family support, prayers, and his NDE. The transformation from suicidal despair to determined rehabilitation following the NDE enabled what should have been medically impossible.
