Patient 12 in Sartori's prospective study was involved in a traffic accident and suffered serious injury to his chest, a torn liver, and a broken right shoulder with a complex fracture. Due to his critical condition in intensive care, the orthopedic surgeon had to postpone surgery on the right shoulder until after discharge from the ICU. During his time in critical condition, the patient experienced an NDE.
When the surgeon finally examined the patient after his ICU discharge, he was amazed to discover that the broken bone had already healed completely. This development was remarkable because the injury had involved a complex fracture that would normally require surgical intervention. The healing occurred spontaneously during the patient's time in intensive care, when he was too critically ill to undergo the planned surgery. The orthopedic surgeon could not explain the healing and supposed that it might be normal for patients with head injuries to heal quickly. However, Sartori pointed out that this explanation was not relevant because the patient's injuries had not included any head injury. The spontaneous healing of a complex fracture without surgical intervention remains medically unexplained. This case represents another instance of miraculous healing associated with an NDE, where a serious injury that would normally require surgery healed spontaneously during the patient's critical illness and near-death experience.
