A 60-year-old British patient known as Patient 10 in Penny Sartori's prospective study had suffered from cerebral palsy with right spastic hemiparesis since birth, causing his right hand to be permanently contracted in a claw-like position. Medical records documented this congenital abnormality, and a splint had been made for his hand years earlier, though it proved ineffective. During hospitalization in intensive care, he experienced cardiac arrest and had an NDE with verified paranormal perceptions.
After his NDE, the patient was suddenly able to open his previously contracted hand, even though he did not report that the NDE explicitly involved healing. The physiotherapist explained that the hand should not have been capable of opening without an operation to release the tendons that had been in a contracted position for more than 60 years. No extensive physiotherapy had been performed on his hand during hospitalization. The medical notes prior to discharge mentioned increased muscle tone in his contracted hand. This spontaneous healing of a lifelong congenital deformity remains medically unexplained. The fact that his contracture had resolved was mentioned only when the patient misinterpreted a question during the in-depth interview. His sister provided a witness statement confirming the extent of his contracture prior to the NDE. Additionally, the patient's walking impediment, also present since birth, suddenly and markedly improved after his NDE. The healed hand remains inexplicable as there is no known mechanism for how permanently shortened tendons due to spastic hemiparesis from birth could spontaneously open fully.
