Su, a 93-year-old Chinese Buddhist woman, was dying of cancer and being cared for by her daughter Lily. As her death approached, Su frequently dreamed of her deceased husband and expressed acceptance of her impending death, saying she would join him soon. Both Su and Lily, as Buddhists, had come to terms with Su's approaching transition. The case was documented by hospice nurse Maggie Callanan who was providing end-of-life care.
One day, Su reported to her daughter that her husband was calling her to join him, which seemed natural given her condition and their Buddhist beliefs about death and reunion. However, a few days later, Su became very puzzled and asked a surprising question: "Why is my sister with my husband? They are both calling me to come." When asked if her sister was dead, Su replied, "No, she still lives in China. I have not seen her for many years." This confusion was notable because Su believed her sister was still alive. The revelation deeply affected Lily, who tearfully told Nurse Callanan: "My aunt died two days ago in China. We decided not to tell Mother—her sister had the same kind of cancer. It was a very painful death; she lived in a remote village where good medical care was not available. We didn't want to upset or frighten Mother, since she is so sick herself." The family had deliberately withheld this information to protect Su from additional distress during her final days. After discussion with the hospice nurse about the meaning of Su's vision, Lily decided to tell her mother the truth about her sister's death. When informed, Su responded with a knowing smile, saying "Now I understand." Her puzzle was solved—she now comprehended why her sister was appearing with her husband to call her home. Su died peacefully three weeks later with a sense of anticipation about reuniting with both her husband and sister. This case provides verification that Su perceived her sister's presence without any knowledge of her death.
