A young boy was in a coma following a serious car accident that had also involved his mother and brother Peter. Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross was attending to him when he briefly emerged from his comatose state. The accident had been severe enough to cause critical injuries to multiple family members, with the boy requiring intensive medical care and remaining unconscious for an extended period.
During his brief return to consciousness, the boy spoke directly to Dr. Kübler-Ross with remarkable clarity and calm. He told her, "Yes, everything is all right now. Mommy and Peter are already waiting for me." He displayed a contented smile after making this statement, showing no distress but rather a sense of peace and anticipation. After delivering this message, he slipped back into the coma from which he would never recover. Dr. Kübler-Ross was aware that the boy's mother had died at the scene of the accident, but she believed his brother Peter had survived. Peter had been taken to a different hospital with serious burns because the car had caught fire before rescuers could extricate him. As far as she knew from the available information, Peter was still alive and receiving treatment at the other facility. Concerned about the boy's statement, Dr. Kübler-Ross decided to contact the other hospital to verify Peter's condition. However, just as she was about to place the call, she received an incoming call from that hospital. They were calling to notify her that Peter had died just a few minutes earlier. This timing meant the boy had accurately perceived his brother's presence in the afterlife at the moment of or immediately after Peter's death, despite having no possible way of knowing about it. Dr. Kübler-Ross noted she had witnessed this pattern multiple times - children perceiving deceased loved ones whose deaths were unknown to them.
