Nine-year-old Eddie Cuomo suffered from a high fever that persisted for 36 hours while his parents and medical personnel maintained a vigil over him. The severity of his condition required constant medical supervision and his parents stayed at the hospital throughout the crisis. When Eddie finally regained consciousness at 3:00 AM, he immediately began sharing his near-death experience with his parents and Dr. K.M. Dale who was present.
Eddie told them he had been in heaven during his unconscious state. He reported seeing his late Grandpa Cuomo, as well as his Aunt Rosa and Uncle Lorenzo, all of whom he knew had previously died. His father felt embarrassed that Dr. Dale had to overhear Eddie's account and tried to dismiss it as a hallucinatory dream brought on by the fever. However, Eddie then made a stunning revelation that changed everything. Eddie stated that he had also seen his 19-year-old sister Teresa during his heavenly experience. He specifically reported that Teresa had been the one to tell him he had to go back to his body. This deeply unsettled his father because just two nights earlier he had spoken with Teresa, who was away at college in Vermont. The claim was so disturbing that Eddie's father asked Dr. Dale to give Eddie a sedative, unable to process what his son was saying. Later that morning, Eddie's parents called Teresa's college in Vermont to check on her. They received devastating news: Teresa had been killed in a car accident just after midnight the previous night. College officials had been trying unsuccessfully to contact the parents to inform them of the tragedy, but the parents had been at the hospital with Eddie throughout the night, out of communication. The timing confirmed that Eddie had encountered his sister in his NDE at a time when no one in the family knew she had died.
