Renate A. from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, experienced a life-threatening medical crisis on Christmas Day 1993 while living in Saarland. She had been suffering from severe alcoholism which had seriously deteriorated her physical condition. The alcohol-related damage caused her to fall into a coma and she was admitted to the hospital. Her husband Bernd later discovered a doctor's note dated December 15, 1993, warning that Mrs. A.'s illness was life-threatening due to liver cirrhosis with acute danger from bleeding esophageal varices.
The day after Christmas, Renate was transferred to the university clinic in Homburg. When her husband arrived, he found her in the recreation room smoking a cigarette, having recovered from a near-death experience the previous night. The doctors had given her up for dead during the crisis. During her NDE, she encountered her late father and her aunt Cilla in what she described as the afterlife realm. Both deceased relatives communicated with her and insisted she return to her body because her time had not yet come. The most remarkable aspect of this case was the veridical element involving Aunt Cilla. Both Renate and her husband Bernd knew that Renate's father had died, but they believed Aunt Cilla was still alive and well. Neither had any reason to suspect she had passed away. Renate specifically identified seeing and interacting with Aunt Cilla during her NDE, along with her father, both telling her she needed to return to life. A week after Christmas, when Bernd visited his mother-in-law, she asked if she could accompany him to the hospital and whether Renate was recovered enough to hear sad news. That very day, Renate's mother had received a letter stating that her sister Cilla had died and been laid to rest three days before the letter was written. Counting back the days revealed that Cilla had died shortly before Renate's NDE, confirming Renate had encountered someone she couldn't have known was deceased.
