Huriye Kacar experienced a severe medical crisis during childbirth at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. She went to the hospital to deliver her second child but experienced catastrophic complications requiring emergency caesarian section. During the procedure, she lost massive amounts of blood and went into cardiac arrest, with her heart stopping three times according to her sister. The medical team performed extensive resuscitation efforts including defibrillation and connection to a heart-lung machine.
During her cardiac arrests, Huriye had an out-of-body experience where she observed the medical procedures from above. She saw the doctor saying "Her eyes are shut" and the nurse adding "She's asleep." She watched as they placed a green screen below her chest and observed the doctor opening her abdomen with a scalpel and pulling the baby out by her head. She cried out "He's cutting me open!" though no one could hear her. She saw the umbilical cord being cut and the baby being laid on her chest briefly before being handed to Nurse Melissa. The veridical aspects included her accurate observation of the caesarian procedure while completely unconscious, the specific dialogue between medical staff, and the green surgical screen placement. She correctly described seeing her husband's head and the baby trying to suck on his face when she briefly regained consciousness. Remarkably, her sister Emine had been visited by their deceased grandmother at 2:11 AM, who accurately predicted Huriye's soul would leave her body and she would have a very hard time but would recover. After the crisis, Huriye required a hysterectomy due to uncontrolled bleeding and remained in intensive care for an extended period. She had to stay in the hospital for 12 days total, with 17 doctors and 50 nurses involved in her care. Medical records obtained by her sister confirmed the accuracy of Huriye's observations during her unconscious state.
