In September 1963, 8-year-old Ken Leth experienced an NDE during emergency appendectomy surgery. He left his body and was placed in a protective bubble that took him through the universe and a spinning tunnel. At a cloud-like barrier, a "happy looking man" in modern pants and a leather jacket pulled him up by his shoulders. This man, later identified as his father's cousin Eddie who was killed in the Korean War, led him to meet deceased relatives.
Ken encountered many relatives who wanted to know who he was. When he said "I am Kenneth Leth" in his small voice, some recognized the name. Upon learning he was Lyle's son, many gasped with recognition, saying "Oh, you're Lyle's son." He was quickly introduced to numerous departed family members, with two older couples standing out most prominently - his two great-grandmothers and their husbands on his father's side. Years later, when Ken's living grandmother showed him oval-framed photographs from the early 1900s that she had stored in her basement, he immediately recognized them as his great-grandparents whom he had met in heaven in 1963. She only showed him these photos because he kept talking about meeting his great-grandparents during his NDE. His father also confirmed Ken's description of Eddie, his favorite cousin. Ken's brother Steve later verified to researcher Robert Mays that their father had confirmed Ken's physical descriptions of his great-grandmother and her dominant behavior, as well as the description of cousin Eddie, though no photos of Eddie existed for reference.
