On November 10, 2008, neurosurgeon Eben Alexander developed severe bacterial meningitis and fell into a deep coma. His NDE was unusual in that he experienced complete loss of memory, language, and personal identity. Beginning in what he called the "Earthworm Eye View" - a dark, murky realm - he was lifted through a tunnel of white-gold light into "The Gateway," a hyperreal heaven-like realm of extraordinary beauty with a verdant valley and flowering trees.
Most remarkably, Alexander found himself floating on a butterfly wing accompanied by a beautiful young woman with high cheekbones, deep blue eyes, and golden-brown hair. She communicated telepathically that he was loved and cherished forever, that he would learn many things, but would eventually return. Alexander remembered her features and clothing so precisely that he frequently described her to his wife Holley and friends, who could almost visualize her. Four months after his recovery, Alexander received his first photograph of Betsy, his youngest biological sister who had died nine years earlier, before he could meet her. Alexander had been adopted at four months old and only reunited with his birth family a year before his illness. Upon seeing Betsy's photo - showing her long brown hair, deep blue eyes, and radiant smile - he immediately recognized her as the woman from the butterfly wing. Family friend Sylvia White independently confirmed that Betsy matched Alexander's earlier descriptions "right down to her high cheekbones." This third-party verification of his descriptions before seeing the photograph provides exceptional evidential value.
