In spring 1971, Viola Horton, in her mid-30s, underwent routine gallbladder surgery in North Augusta, South Carolina. Days later while recovering in the hospital, she suddenly experienced cardiac arrest. During resuscitation efforts, she left her body and found herself in the hospital corridor observing family and friends who had rushed to the hospital upon hearing of her critical condition.
Horton made several remarkable veridical observations. She noted her daughter Kathy wearing mismatched plaids. Moving through the corridor, she witnessed her brother-in-law telling a neighbor that he was canceling his out-of-town plans because Horton was "going to kick the bucket" and he would need to be a pallbearer - an insensitive remark that stuck with her. Both observations were later confirmed by the embarrassed parties. After moving through a tunnel to a colorful meadow, Horton was guided by beings of light. Most remarkably, she encountered a baby who claimed to be her brother, though she only knew of having two sisters. The infant, wearing a tiny cap and dress with socks and booties, told her to describe his appearance to their father. When she recovered and shared this detail, her father acknowledged that his first child had indeed been a boy who died days after birth - never discussed in the family. Cheryl Moody confirmed in 2015 that Raymond Moody's interviews with the family verified the accuracy of each perception, making this one of the most extensively validated NDE cases.
