On Father's Day 1988, Sherry's 3-year-old son fell into his grandmother's swimming pool while adults were distracted. When discovered, he was floating unconscious, turning blue with purple lips and not breathing. After his stepfather administered CPR, the boy regained consciousness briefly before losing it again en route to the hospital. The paramedics diverted to a more distant hospital in Christiana, Delaware, 20 minutes away, due to the severity of his condition.
That evening after returning home, the boy suddenly broke down sobbing intensely, saying "I just want to go back to heaven with Pop-pop." He then described his near-death experience: initially struggling in the pool and experiencing pain, followed by peace and white light everywhere. He met a man he somehow knew to be his great-grandfather, who had died when the boy was only 10 months old. The man told him he had to go back because it wasn't his time yet. The family had never really discussed this great-grandfather, yet the boy provided a perfect physical description: somewhat bald with hair on the sides, short, and stocky but not fat. At his great-grandmother's house, he would identify objects as "Pop-pop's." Most remarkably, he reported meeting the Virgin Mary who told him he would receive a book from his great-grandfather when older. Years later, his great-grandmother confirmed that Pop-pop had indeed intended a book for his great-grandson. The boy's fearless behavior afterward - immediately jumping into the pool's deep end the next day wearing arm floats - demonstrated the transformative effect of his experience.
