3½-year-old Andrew underwent open-heart surgery, after which he began describing his near-death experience to his mother. Two weeks post-surgery, he started asking questions about "when he could go back to the beautiful sunny place with all the flowers and animals." His mother documented his account and contacted researcher Sam Parnia with the remarkable details.
Andrew described being taken by a "floating lady" who held his hand as they floated up together. He observed himself from above, lying in a bed with his arms by his sides while doctors worked on his chest. Everything appeared very bright, and he eventually floated back down to his body. He emphasized that the experience was not scary but lovely, and that the lady who accompanied him loved him and looked after him during the procedure. He was aware his parents were outside during the heart surgery. A year later, while watching a television program about pediatric heart surgery, Andrew recognized the bypass machine and stated it was the same type used in his operation. He claimed to have observed this machine while floating with "that lady." The veridical observation became even more remarkable when his mother showed him an old photograph of her own mother at a younger age. Andrew immediately identified her, saying "That's her, that's that lady." This case provides multiple forms of verification: the child's accurate description of surgical procedures and equipment he could not have seen normally, and his spontaneous recognition of his deceased grandmother whom he had never met, from an old photograph.
