In March 2003, 4-year-old Colton Burpo underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, Nebraska. Medical staff indicated a significant chance he would not survive. During the operation, the boy experienced cardiac arrest but the surgery ultimately succeeded. Four months later, while driving past the hospital, Colton spontaneously mentioned it was where "the angels sang to me," marking his first disclosure of his NDE.
During his NDE, Colton had a joyous experience in the presence of Jesus and angels. His veridical perceptions were remarkable for a child his age. He accurately saw his father praying alone in a small room while his mother was on the phone in another room - information later confirmed by both parents. He met "Pop," his father's grandfather who had died when Colton's father was young, later recognizing Pop in an old photograph showing him as a young man. Colton noted the close relationship between his father and Pop. Most remarkably, Colton met a deceased sister during his NDE, revealing knowledge that his mother had suffered a miscarriage. His parents had never told him about this lost child due to his young age and the sensitivity of the topic. When Colton disclosed meeting his sister in heaven, it provided profound validation of his experience. The case gained widespread attention through his father Pastor Todd Burpo's book, offering multiple witnesses to Colton's spontaneous revelations and the verification of details he could not have known through normal means.
