Tom was misdiagnosed with an injury that turned out to be pneumonia. By the time he sought a second opinion, his right lung had collapsed and his blood oxygen levels were critically low. He was hospitalized immediately and nearly died. After chest tubes failed to drain enough fluid from his collapsed lung over 13 hours, he underwent emergency surgery for 10.5 hours where surgeons removed his right lung, cleaned the infection, inflated it, and replaced it.
In the ICU when his oxygen kept dropping, Tom had a popping or sucking sensation and found himself out of body with no more pain. He heard the monitoring bells going off. He was in a funnel-like tornado structure with love emanating from it, surrounded by light and colors. He felt the presence of his deceased father and grandmother, along with other beings he felt close to but didn't recognize. He experienced a life review where he felt everything he had done to others - both the hurt and happiness he had caused.
