Durdana Khan, the 2½-year-old daughter of Pakistani army doctor A. G. Khan, developed viral encephalitis in 1968, causing partial paralysis, temporary blindness, and constant pain. One day she was found clinically dead at home. Her father confirmed her death and began resuscitation, whispering "Come back my child, come back." After about 15 minutes, she revived.
During her clinical death, Durdana experienced being in a beautiful garden among the stars with apples, grapes, and pomegranates. Four colored streams flowed through the garden - white, brown, blue, and green. She met her grandfather in this celestial realm and heard her father calling her to return. When she wanted to go back, her grandfather told her she would need to ask God. God asked if she really wanted to return, and when she affirmed, told her to go back. She returned to consciousness on her father's bed, though she had been in no state to know her location. The most remarkable veridical observation occurred later during recovery. While visiting an uncle's home for the first time after brain tumor surgery in Karachi, Durdana spontaneously recognized a photograph on a small table. She pointed and declared "This is my grandpa's mother. I met her in the stars. She took me in her lap and kissed me." This was Khan's grandmother who had died long before Durdana was born. Only two photos of this great-grandmother existed, both in the uncle's possession. Under the circumstances, Durdana could not possibly have seen the photo before. The Khan family friend Peter Brookesmith, editor of The Unexplained book series, vouched for the family's integrity and confirmed Durdana spontaneously recognized her great-grandmother.
