Howard was a chronic alcoholic patient who suffered cardiac arrest during alcohol withdrawal following intestinal surgery. Dr. Laurin Bellg and her team administered magnesium and required four defibrillation attempts before achieving normal heart rhythm, though initially without pulse. During his cardiac arrest, Howard had an extraordinary NDE where he felt himself shoot out through his head and rise through the ceiling, feeling different densities of building materials including insulation, wiring, and pipes. Remarkably, he found himself in the nurse training center directly above the ICU, which he accurately described as having simulated hospital rooms around the perimeter with medical mannequins on beds and a collection of workstations with computers in the center. This area was restricted, accessible only with electronic key-card badges that patients never have. Howard had never been in this hospital before and could not have known about this training facility. He accurately described who was present during resuscitation, what they wore, and what they said. He was particularly struck by Dr. Bellg's lime-green shirt, which became significant when days later, while still on ventilator, he spelled out "green shirt" on a letter board while pointing at her wearing the same shirt. After being weaned from the ventilator five days later, Howard provided detailed accurate accounts of the resuscitation procedures and conversations, all perceived while he was certainly unconscious. This case provides exceptional evidence of veridical perception during cardiac arrest, particularly the impossible knowledge of the restricted training center above.
