A young cardiologist from South Dakota experienced a remarkable case while working in the emergency room. Earlier that morning, he had been involved in a car accident on his way to the hospital, which left him deeply worried about potential damages and liability claims. Still preoccupied by these concerns, he rushed to the emergency room to perform a resuscitation on someone in cardiac arrest. The resuscitation was successful, and the patient survived.
The following day brought an extraordinary revelation. The patient who had been resuscitated told the doctor that during the cardiac arrest, he had left his body and observed the entire resuscitation procedure from an out-of-body perspective. When asked what he had witnessed, the patient provided remarkably accurate details about the medical intervention. He described the exact appearance of the medical instruments used, including their colors and shapes. He accurately recounted the specific order in which various tools and equipment were employed during the resuscitation. The patient even described the settings of the dials on the various machines used during the procedure. Most remarkably, the patient demonstrated telepathic perception of the doctor's mental state. He told the cardiologist, "Doctor, I could tell that you were worried about that accident. But there isn't any reason to be worried about things like that. You give your time to other people. Nobody is going to hurt you." This telepathic observation of the doctor's private concerns about the morning's car accident, which had not been verbally expressed to anyone in the emergency room, convinced the cardiologist of the reality of the patient's experience. The case demonstrates both veridical perception of physical events during cardiac arrest and apparent telepathic awareness of the attending physician's thoughts.
