Dr. Manuel Sans Segarra, former head of General and Digestive Surgery at the University Hospital of Bellvitge in Barcelona, treated a male patient with an esophagus tumor requiring surgical removal. Dr. Sans had informed the patient about the exact surgical method they would use, including that they would perform a thoracotomy (opening the thorax) rather than the less invasive thoracoscopy available at that time.
During the tumor removal surgery, while attempting to extract the tumor, the patient unexpectedly suffered a cardiac arrest. Dr. Sans immediately began manual heart massage using his hands directly on the heart. The medical team also administered adrenaline directly into the patient's heart and performed defibrillation until successfully restoring the heart rhythm. The operation was ultimately successful. After recovery, the patient revealed to Dr. Sans that he had observed his own body during the cardiac arrest. He accurately described seeing his thorax opened and specifically witnessed both the cardiac arrest itself and the exact procedures used to correct it. The patient clearly saw Dr. Sans applying direct manual heart massage to his heart and observed the team injecting something (adrenaline) directly into his heart. These observations were particularly remarkable because no one had informed the patient that he had suffered a cardiac arrest during the surgery. Dr. Sans confirmed via email to researcher Alejandro Agudo Crespo on April 5, 2021, that the patient's account was completely accurate, including the crucial detail that nobody had told the patient about the cardiac arrest before he spontaneously described what he had observed. This eliminates any possibility of the patient learning about the events through normal means.
