A female nurse working at the University Hospital of Bellvitge in Barcelona suffered a serious traffic accident and cardiac arrest in the ambulance during transfer. Dr. Manuel Sans Segarra, head of General and Digestive Surgery, recognized her as a colleague when she arrived. She was unconscious, not breathing, lacking basic reflexes, with multiple fractures and internal bleeding causing hypovolemia (loss of over 2 liters of blood).
The medical team immediately attempted resuscitation using endotracheal intubation with oxygen, artificial ventilation, chest compressions by Dr. Sans himself, intracardiac adrenaline injection, bicarbonate administration, and defibrillation on multiple occasions. Blood transfusions were urgently administered. After 7-8 minutes with transfusions, she showed signs of life, and after 9 minutes her pulse normalized. She was transferred to the OR where her spleen and part of her liver were removed. Importantly, the endotracheal intubation occurred BEFORE CPR initiation, and the patient observed this sequence correctly. Twenty days later in General Surgery, the patient initially refused to discuss her experience. When asked again, she said "You don't need to tell me what happened. I could see how Dr. so-and-so intubated me, how you yourself gave me chest compressions." She had abruptly left her body, observed the medical procedures, and tried unsuccessfully to contact the team, going right through Dr. Sans' body when attempting to touch him. She then visited the adjacent ICU, accurately describing patients and staff appearances, and the Emergency OR where she correctly identified a femoral neck surgery being performed by the trauma team at that exact time. The patient experienced a spiritual phase meeting beings of light and her deceased mother, feeling unprecedented peace and love before receiving a message to return. Dr. Sans verified all observations through hospital computer records, confirming the medical personnel on duty matched her descriptions, the femoral neck surgery was indeed occurring at that time, and she had never discussed any details with anyone before telling him. The patient requested maximum confidentiality regarding names.
