A hospital patient, herself a nurse, suffering from recurring chest pain and severe depression attempted suicide by hanging using a neck collar on a bathroom door hook. Dr. Rawlings found her unconscious with enlarged pupils, no audible heartbeat, swollen tongue, eyes, and bluish face. He administered CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The patient showed flat EKG line (asystole, not ventricular fibrillation), received medications, and was stabilized then transported to ICU where she remained comatose for 4 days. Two days after awakening, Rawlings asked if she remembered anything. She had observed all his efforts, remembered he removed his brown plaid jacket and tossed it on floor, loosened his brown and white striped tie, that the nurse looked worried, that he asked for an Ambu bag and IV catheter, and that two men with gurney came. All memories were correct. Rawlings stressed the patient was clinically dead when observing these things. Patient recovered completely, returned to nursing, had no memory of suicide attempt.
