A 73-year-old man with pressing chest pain collapsed in the hall before entering Dr. Rawlings' office, hitting his head on the wall. He experienced cardiac arrest with ventricular fibrillation. A difficult resuscitation followed where the man clinically died six times in a row - five times he would sit up, push everyone away, try to stand, only to collapse again. On the sixth attempt, the pattern stopped and he regained consciousness completely. The patient later told Rawlings he remembered the doctor saying just before the sixth resuscitation attempt, "We'll try one more time. If the shock doesn't hold this time, let's quit!" He confronted Rawlings: "What did you mean, 'We'll quit'? That was me you were working on." The patient's memory was absolutely correct. Rawlings asserted it was physically impossible for the man to have heard him because he was clinically dead at that moment. This represents a clear case of auditory perception during clinical death with cardiac arrest.
