Sandra do Nascimento, a retired Brazilian psychiatrist with diabetes, heart symptoms, and kidney problems, experienced cardiac arrest. During her NDE, she observed what two doctors and a nurse did to resuscitate her, then experienced the powerful presence of a light and feelings of peace and joy. Three days after resuscitation, she recognized heart surgeon Leonardo Miana who had been involved in the resuscitation, though she had never seen him before the cardiac arrest. She addressed him by his first name Leonardo and knew he had made an incision during resuscitation. She was moved to tears, stressed he had saved her life. A year later, she also recognized the other doctor who assisted Dr. Miana and addressed him by his first name. Both doctors were particularly impressed by her recollections. Miana determined no one could have told her any details about the resuscitation. This case led Miana to become actively involved in the international AWARE Study through a Brazilian project.
