Mr. J., a 46-year-old laborer from northern Georgia, experienced his second heart attack with cardiac arrest in January 1978. During the resuscitation, he had an out-of-body experience where he observed the medical procedures from above without feeling anything. He watched medical staff step back as a nurse prepared to defibrillate him, saw the defibrillator device which he later described as looking like an electric toothbrush, and observed that he received only one electrical shock to his chest. He also saw the room layout including a sink, his bed, two machines, and his wife standing outside the door crying. The resuscitation was exceptionally smooth and successful, requiring only a single defibrillation. Medical records confirmed the unusually smooth resuscitation with single shock, and his wife verified she had been crying outside and confirmed his descriptions matched what she observed through the glass partition.
