Frank arrived nearly dead to the operating room after being resuscitated multiple times during transport from an outlying hospital. The surgical team crashed him onto cardiopulmonary bypass for 90 minutes, then placed him into complete circulatory arrest for 94 minutes with his body cooled and brain chilled with ice. During this time, the BIS monitor showed he was isoelectric with no brain activity. Against expectations, Frank survived and recovered remarkably well. When Dr. Yerington visited him in the ICU, Frank revealed he had been conscious throughout the surgery. He accurately described seeing the operation from above, including specific details like the red-haired tech who came from next door to do CPR, Yerington elbowing him aside, and the surgeon saying they should call it. Most remarkably, Frank recited from memory the three serial numbers from the tops of the operating lights in OR #20, which he said he could see while trapped on the ceiling. He recognized Yerington's voice and knew specific conversations that occurred during the circulatory arrest when his brain showed no activity. The anesthesiologist's brother, also a cardiac anesthesiologist, stated such recall could not possibly have happened given the medical circumstances.
