A 73-year-old man with chest pain collapsed in the hallway before entering Dr. Rawlings' office, hitting his head on the wall. After a few coughing breaths, he stopped breathing and experienced cardiac arrest with ventricular fibrillation. An extremely difficult resuscitation followed where the man clinically died six times in succession - five times sitting up, pushing everyone away, trying to stand, then collapsing again. On the sixth resuscitation attempt, just before the final shock, the patient heard Dr. Rawlings say to a colleague, "We'll try one more time. If the shock doesn't hold this time, let's quit!" The sixth attempt was successful and the patient regained consciousness completely. Later, the man confronted Rawlings: "What did you mean, 'We'll quit'? That was me you were working on." His memory was absolutely correct. Rawlings emphasized it was physically impossible for the man to have heard this because he was clinically dead at that moment. The patient's accurate recall of the doctor's words during clinical death, when hearing would have been impossible, provides strong evidence for consciousness during cardiac arrest. The man made a complete recovery after this dramatic resuscitation.
