A hospital patient, a nurse by profession, was suffering from recurring chest pain and severe depression. She attempted suicide by hanging using a neck collar on a bathroom door hook. Dr. Rawlings found her unconscious with swollen tongue, eyes, and bluish face. She had no detectable heartbeat, enlarged pupils, and was clinically dead. Rawlings administered CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while nurses brought emergency equipment. During her clinical death and coma, she observed all resuscitation efforts from outside her body. She accurately recalled Dr. Rawlings removing his brown plaid jacket and tossing it on the floor, loosening his brown and white striped tie. She remembered the worried expression of the assisting nurse, the request for an Ambu bag and IV catheter, and the arrival of two men with a gurney. After four days in a coma, she awoke and accurately described all these specific details to Dr. Rawlings. All her observations were correct, made while she was clinically dead. Remarkably, she recovered completely, returned to nursing work, and had no memory of the suicide attempt or any further suicidal thoughts. Rawlings emphasized these observations occurred during clinical death.
