Mr. J., a 46-year-old laborer from northern Georgia, experienced his second heart attack with cardiac arrest in January 1978. During the cardiac arrest, he had an out-of-body experience where he observed his resuscitation from above, seeing everything visually without feeling anything. He watched as medical staff stood back for the nurse who resuscitated him. He observed receiving only one electrical shock to his chest and noted the specific appearance of the defibrillator being used. From his elevated vantage point, Mr. J. observed the heads of doctors and nurses, the room layout including a sink, his bed, and two machines. He also saw his wife standing outside the door to his room, crying. Dr. Sabom consulted the medical records and confirmed the resuscitation had gone exceptionally smoothly, corresponding with the patient's observation of receiving only one shock. The defibrillation procedure matched standard protocol. Sabom contacted the patient's wife, who confirmed she had been crying during her husband's cardiac arrest and that the patient's descriptions matched the actual resuscitation as she observed it through the glass partition. The single shock success and all observed details were medically verified.
