Mrs. M., a 60-year-old homemaker, was admitted to a neurosurgery ward in January 1978 for serious back pain. During her morning admission, she experienced a cardiac arrest in her hospital room. The sudden medical emergency triggered an extensive near-death experience during which she maintained clear consciousness and was able to observe the entire resuscitation process from an out-of-body perspective.
During her NDE, Mrs. M. observed all the medical procedures performed during her resuscitation with remarkable clarity. She watched as the medical team brought in and used various pieces of equipment including the ventilator and the crash cart. She observed the team pounding on her chest during CPR compressions and watched them establishing intravenous lines, though she experienced no pain during any of these normally painful procedures. She witnessed the placement of a ventilator mask on her face and observed as medical staff lifted her eyelids to examine her eyes. She watched them checking her pulse and saw them drawing blood from her hand for testing. Mrs. M. also perceived auditory information during her experience. She clearly heard a doctor announce that she should be transferred to the intensive care unit. Following this announcement, she observed a young nurse gathering all her personal belongings and carefully packing them into bags and suitcases in preparation for the transfer. Interestingly, despite these preparations, the transfer to the ICU did not ultimately take place. Throughout the experience, she was able to identify the various doctors and nurses who entered her room during the emergency response. When Dr. Michael Sabom later studied the medical report and compared it with Mrs. M.'s account, he found that her descriptions corresponded accurately with the documented procedures. The blood sample taken from her hand, which she had specifically observed, was explicitly mentioned in the medical records. Sabom was particularly impressed by the remarkably realistic and detailed nature of her description of the resuscitation procedures, noting the accuracy of her observations despite having no prior medical knowledge or experience.
